So interestingly, “Writing” is actually distinct as a “Topic". On a WordPress blog it would be more equivalent to a Category. On Medium you can opt to follow the topic.

However, Tags do also exist but they don’t have a follow function on Medium, they could be considered as an equivalent to hashtags on other platforms.

This can get confusing because anyone can make up any Tag they want and submit it into the system. Where only the company can create Topics.

This is doubly confusing when the search function is used where Topics and Tags all get Mashed together and look presented all as one thing.

While it would be nice if Medium managed and sorted the content in both there’s actually no system validations of tagging (tagging referring to adding both Topics and Tags to a post, I know its confusing).

Basically, its my position that we, as the members, need to take the responsibility on ourselves to set some standards if we want things to get better.

To that end I created an article with some Topics and Tags listed and defined. It’s a small step, but a good step in the direction of making it easier to find relevant content and not the same content mill articles.
