Medium is definitely formulated for the finance and self-help groups. It’s arguable that this is because that’s what’s been popular for the last few years. That said, I can’t express how much of a chore it is to explore writing on this platform.

Even after updating my settings in a way that actually started showing me articles from people I follow, finding more people seems like a 5-10 click process. In the UX world that’s basically a cardinal sin and as a user is exhausting.

That said, and with love, I have to also call out medium users as well. As someone who doesn’t have a lot of readership read time is quite apparent, and it’s not hard to correlate to specific readers. Many of us are scanning rather than reading and since read time is what is now rewarded-we are all basically screwing each other over by both spending any time on random articles suggested by Medium and by scanning or speed reading articles. We all could do a better job truly reading and lingering on article. It’s more time to spend but it’s also a critical element of doing this work to support each other.

As a general rule I try to be aware of the time it estimates it takes to read the article and engage with it for around that time.

It’s not the only rule I have, but its probably the most important for all of us finding some measure of success.
