A 500 Word Feedback Challenge
For storytellers and the works they’ve never gotten honest feedback about.
Here’s the deal. If you’re anything like me you’ve probably be writing your story for a while. You’ve probably also passed it along to random friends, family, maybe even the occasional acquaintance. From everything you’ve heard, your writing is great and they like it. Which no doubt feels nice.
But, there’s something inside you that wonders… is it great, really?
You think — it would be nice to get some kind of feedback. Maybe you’d hate it, maybe it would rip a hole in your soul to have someone really examine it.
Still, what could it hurt to get some kind of in depth feedback.
Well if this sounds like you I want to offer you that experience. All you have to do is in a response drop 500–700 words of your story for examination!
Because I was this person and for the first few years of my writing life the constant protection of my writerly aspirations were appreciated, but unhelpful in actually helping me grow my skills or ultimately confidence in my writing.
My feedback will be as a response to your response so it will all be on this article.
Now just to be clear…
I am no one of particular consequence. I’m not a published author, editor, or any kind of genuine professional. I’m at best an aspiring author, at worst a hobbyist writer.
What I can say is that I’ll be honest, I’ll be practical in my feedback, I definitely won’t be mean, and my feedback will have nothing to do with your grammar, spelling, or punctuation. (That’s not to say that honest feedback isn’t tough to hear and won’t hurt, because it definitely does sometimes. I should know!)
But, I’m also someone who’s been part of writing groups for many years, and whose feedback has been deemed as helpful and dare I say even insightful at times.
I say 500–700 because that’s really not enough for you to worry about giving your story away, and it should be plenty for me to drop you some decent feedback.
This is absolutely a shot in the dark, and maybe no one will be interested but if you are. I’ll be excited to be a person for you that I never had before I had to deep dive for 3 years into all this storytelling craziness to see possible avenues of how I could improve.
